Swedish author Selma Lagerlof wrote The Wonderful Adventures of Nils to help the children of Sweden learn geography. Its hero, the young Nils Holgersson, is a naughty lad, whose "chief delight was to eat and sleep, and after that he liked best to make mischief." But a run-in with a tomte leaves Nils transformed into a tomte himself, and soon is borne away on the back of one of his family's geese, who yearns to join the wild geese flying overhead. As he flies over the regions of Sweden, Nils learns more about his country and, ultimately, more about himself.
