About Us

Our Toys | Our Folk Art | Our Christmas Folk Art

To put it simply, The Wooden Wagon is a family business.

The store is family-owned and -operated (primarily by Adam, a stay-at-home dad); the majority of our manufacturers are themselves family-run and have been for generations; and the goods we sell are all meant to enrich the family life of our customers. Our method of selecting our toys and folk art reflects these family values: We offer nothing that we would not want in our own home, whether it is a child's toy or an ornament that is brought out on special family occasions.

Waldorf Fair boothWe were led into the toy world by our own experience as parents. When our eldest son was born, we began to notice how difficult it is to find good wooden toys in America. The stores only seemed to stock items of plastic and rubber, frequently tied in to a popular TV show or book. These toys were functional but not satisfying.

How different it was to visit the shops near our family in Germany! In Bremen and Hamburg we found toys that bore the mark of the workshop, not the assembly line. Wood seemed to be the norm, not the exception. And when people at home asked where we found these toys, we found ourselves saying again and again, "I'm sorry, you can't get them in America."

Well, now you can. The Wooden Wagon offers a great variety of toys and folk art directly imported and not found anywhere in America.

Our toy selection continues to grow as our own children grow, as we look for (and better understand) toys appropriate for their increasing years.

We now include American manufacturers who share our belief in open-ended play (such as Sarah's Silks, Fairy Finery and Heartwood Arts), largely because we have found them so fun and appealing at home.

As our sons' young hands and minds grow more capable and creative, we have added arts and crafts supplies, science kits, toys for active play and costumes for active imaginations.

The Wooden Wagon represents what our children like, and what we like, and what we think you, the customer, will like to have in your own home.
