For Christmas and other seasonal celebrations, we offer decorations and other folk art from Germany's Erzgebirge region, and especially from the world-famous toymaking village of Seiffen. We have the largest American selection of German Christmas candle pyramids by the Flath workshop, as well as windmills by Preissler, Hiemann, Gunther and KWO. Our nutcrackers are handcrafted in the Fuechtner family workshop, where the first nutcracker king was carved 125 years ago. As with these decorations, our candelabra, ornaments, smoking men, nativity scenes and schwibbogen are made by small Erzgebirge workshops, many of which have been crafting such folk art for one hundred years or more. The Wooden Wagon also sells the charming miniature figures by Flade (noted for their flax hair), Wendt und Kuehn (including the world-famous angels with green polka-dot wings) and KWO. The folk-art sensibility is represented in our traditional folk art toys selection, where many fine examples of Reifendrehen (or ring-turned) woodcarving abound: the Noah's Ark by Christian Werner is but one example of this unique form of woodworking. |
